The practicality of photography as a precise machinic product has long provided grounds to undermine the aesthetic value of photography. Especially at a time when emphasizing purity and transcendence in art has become mainstream in aesthetics, photography cemented its position as a means to achieve technical efficiency.
In this climate, art photography gradually moved away from touting its practical nature while, contrarily, commercial photography sought other roles of photography through acknowledging its own product-drivenness. Here, commercial photography is characterized by its reliance on an employer, a client, and a system of labor division among numerous stakeholders, the collectivity of which grants photography its legitimacy, beauty, and moral standards in exchange for autonomy and freedom.
UNCOMMERCIAL: Korean Commercial Photography, 1984 and Beyond sheds light on the original style and historical trajectory of Korean commercial photography that burgeoned with rapid economic advancement in the 1980s. At a time when unrestricted competition and growth in the market largely influenced the criteria of an “image,” commercial photography propelled quantitative and qualitative changes on micro-social levels by spreading trends in the explosive prosperity of popular culture. 1984 was the year when THE WOLGAN MOT introduced global fashion trends to Seoul readers and when Apple’s new Macintosh made possible the computerization of advertisement production. More than that, the concept and customs of commercial photography shifted with the return of the first generation of photographers to study abroad; and, with this turning point, Korean commercial photography of the 1990s through the 2000s reached its prime.
Commercial photography is often seen as a secular medium that accedes to reality. At the same time, however, commercial photography is an outlet that thoroughly reflects and renews the increasingly complex desires of consumer society─a darkroom of the unconscious, where these desires develop into unique aesthetic styles. In this process, the secularity of commercial photography recreates the typical historical documentation or representation into something unpredictable and personal. UNCOMMERCIAL invites the audience to explore the originality of Korean commercial photography and examine what it means for something to be “commercial” today through the work of 29 photographers who have pioneered contemporary commercial photography since 1984.
