일민미술관의 《2025 ARKO Leap》는 한국문화예술위원회 지역예술도약지원사업의 일환으로, 해외 무대를 오가며 독자적인 예술세계를 구축해 온 중견 작가들의 새로운 도약을 지원하고 그 성과를 조명하기 위해 마련되었다. 한국문화예술위원회가 선정한 네 명의 작가—송성진, 임안나, 홍희령, 이현태—는 우리가 살아가는 장소가 어떻게 구성되고, 기억/기록되고, 전환되는지를 기억과 이미지, 감정과 기술의 다양한 층위에서 탐색한다.

송성진은 역사가 각인된 구체적인 장소와 그곳에서 밀려난 존재들의 삶에 주목해 왔다. 《(무)관심영역》은 최근 그가 라오스에서 진행한 프로젝트를 중심으로 구성된다. 작가는 베트남전쟁의 상흔이 일상에 깊이 스민 현장을 관찰하고 체류하며, 전쟁의 잔해가 생활 도구로 변형된 현실을 포착한다. 임안나는 사진을 통해 매체적으로 번역된 현실-이미지의 위치를 탐색해 왔다. 《유령을 쫓아서》는 전쟁과 재난의 기호, 대규모 가상 훈련 장면을 담은 ‘기록’을 경유해, 사진을 거쳐서만 도달할 수 있는 현실의 이면을 비춘다. 이러한 시도는 미디어 속 이미지를 ‘유령(스펙트럼)’으로 상정하고 그 근원을 추적했던 작가의 여정을 압축한다. 홍희령은 개인의 내밀한 심리적 공간을 기술 매체와 결합한 설치로 시각화해 왔다. 《잠 못 드는 밤》은 불안, 공포, 결핍 등 현대인이 겪는 부정적 정서가 머무는 내면의 장소를 다룬다. 작가는 잠과 각성의 경계인 불면의 상태를 사진, 영상, 설치를 결합해 구현하고, 고요한 밤에 뒤엉키는 생각과 감정의 흐름을 공간 전체로 확장한다. 이현태는 디지털 환경이라는 비물질 장소의 작동 원리와 시간성을 탐구해 왔다. 《나선정원》은 웹 기반의 오디오비주얼 시스템을 미술관 공간에 이식한 가상 정원을 선보인다. 작가가 ‘셰헤라자데 장치’라고 부르는 이 시스템은 가상 정원의 화자가 되어 이미지를 배치하고 소리를 호출하며 시간을 전개한다.

오늘날 우리는 쉽게 지정학적 경계를 넘고, 미디어를 통해 재현된 현실을 마주하며, 내면의 심리적 공간에 침잠하고, 디지털 네트워크가 구축한 세계를 유영한다. 《2025 ARKO Leap》는 이처럼 다층적으로 분화된 장소의 좌표를 탐색하는 네 작가의 시선을 따른다. 이들은 여러 주체가 서로의 자리를 인식하며 다시 위치 짓는 과정을 드러낸다. 이때 공간, 위치, 장소는 사건의 배경에 머무르는 특정한 ‘곳’이 아니라 서로 다른 감각이 교차하는 지형, ‘무언가를 그곳에 있게 하는 방식’으로 부상한다.

Ilmin Museum of Art’s 2025 ARKO Leap is organized as part of ‘2025 ARKO Regional Arts advancement support program.’ The exhibition supports a new leap forward for mid-career artists who have largely developed their own artistic universes on international stages, and it sheds light on the outcomes of their practices. The four artists selected by Arts Council Korea—Song Sungjin, Lim Anna, Hong Heeryung, and Lee Hyuntae—explore how the places we inhabit are constructed, remembered and recorded, and transformed, moving across multiple strata of memory and image, affect and technology.

Song Sungjin has focused on specific sites inscribed with history and on the lives pushed out of them. The Realm of (Un)Interest centers on a recent project the artist carried out in Laos. Observing and spending time in places where the scars of the Vietnam War are deeply woven into daily life, the artist captures a reality in which remnants of war have been repurposed into household items. Lim Anna has examined the position of reality-as-image as it is translated through media by photography. Chasing the Spectrum passes through ‘archives’ that contain signs of war and disaster and scenes of large-scale disaster drills, revealing the reverse side of reality—one that becomes visible only through photography. These attempts distill the artist’s ongoing journey of treating images circulating in the media as “ghosts (spectrums),” and tracing their origins. Hong Heeryung has visualized the innermost psychological spaces of the individual through installations along with technological media. Insomnia addresses the inner sites where negative emotions experienced by contemporary subjects—anxiety, fear, a sense of lack—come to dwell. Combining photography, video, and installation, the artist renders insomnia, that state hovering between sleep and wakefulness, and extends the tangled flow of thoughts and feelings that surface in the still of the night across the entire exhibition space. Lee Hyuntae has investigated the operational logic and temporality of the immaterial site called the digital environment. Spiral Garden is a virtual garden that transplants a web-based audiovisual system into the physical space of the museum. This system—what the artist entitles the “Scheherazade Instruments”—acts as the speaker of the virtual garden, configuring images, summoning sounds, and unfolding time.

Today, we effortlessly cross geopolitical borders, encounter realities reproduced through media, sink into the spaces of our mind, and drift through the worlds built by digital networks. 2025 ARKO Leap follows the four artists as they map the coordinates of these multilayered and segmented places. Their works reveal the progress of how multiple subjects recognize one another’s positions and relocate themselves. Here, space, position, and place are no longer merely fixed “sites” that serve as the backdrop to incidents; they emerge instead as terrains where heterogeneous senses intersect—as modes of “making something be there.”
