일민미술관은 페드로 코스타와 후이 샤페즈의 «멀리 있는 방»전을 개최합니다. 이 두 작가는 국제적으로 활동하는 포르투갈의 대표적인 예술가들로, 2005년부터 협업 전시를 해왔습니다. 세계 유수의 공간에서 영상과 조각의 만남을 주도해 온 그들의 작업세계를 주한 포르투갈 대사관과 함께 서울에 선보이게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다.
페드로 코스타는 포르투갈의 빈민가나 아프리카 오지 사람들의 인생을 추적하는 영화를 꾸준히 제작하며 독특한 세계관을 표출해온 세계적 명성의 시네아스트입니다. 조각가 후이 샤페즈는 문학적인 모티프에서 출발하여 자유 드로잉을 연상케 하는 대형 철제 조각품을 제작하며 무게의 아이러니를 구현하고 있습니다.
일반적으로 영상과 조각의 조합은 내용적인 것과 조형적인 것의 결합, 그리고 그에 따른 시너지 효과를 기대하게 합니다. 그러나 두 작가는 이에 그치지 않고 빛과 물질 이면에 존재하는, 보이지 않는 에너지의 파장에 주목합니다. 이를 더욱 강조하는 것은 칠흑 같은 어둠입니다. 관람객이 전시실의 어둠에 적응하는 동안 페드로 코스타의 영상 사이로 단단하고 묵묵하게 자리하고 있는 후이 샤페즈의 조각 작품이 서서히 실체를 드러냅니다. 예상치 못한 어둠의 정적 속에서 관객은 자신의 존재를 온전히 느끼는 경험을 하게 됩니다.
현대예술은 결과물이기보다 다양한 방식의 상상이자 도전이라 할 수 있습니다. 영화감독 페드로 코스타와 조각가 후이 샤페즈, 각자의 작업세계는 협업으로 만나 확대된 상상을 만들어 냅니다. 그리고 2016년 여름, 서울 광화문의 일민미술관은 유럽 두 작가의 작업과 만나 낯설지만 흥미로운 도전을 선보입니다.

The Ilmin Museum of Art presents Distant Rooms by Pedro Costa and Rui Chafes. As the representative artists of Portugal, the two have exhibited together since 2005. It is with great pleasure that we present, with the Embassy of Portugal in Seoul, the art world of the two artists that have led the encounter between video and sculpture in prominent spaces around the world.
Pedro Costa is a cineaste of worldly fame that has produced films tracing the lives of people living in the slums and backwoods of Portugal and Africa, expressing a unique outlook on the world. Sculptor Rui Chafes starts from literary motifs and produces large steel sculptures reminiscent of free style drawings, manifesting the irony of weight.
A combination of video and sculpture would generally invite the audience to expect a combination of contents and form, and its following synergy. But the two artists go further. They focus on the invisible waves of energy that exists beyond light and material. What further accentuates this is the pitch darkness. While the audience adjusts to the darkness of the galleries, Rui Chafes’ sculptures that sturdily and silently stand in between Costa’s videos would slowly reveal themselves. Faced with an unexpected world of withdrawal, the viewers are presented a unique experience of fully sensing their own existences.
Contemporary art is not so much a result product as a variety of imaginations and challenges. Each world of film director Pedro Costa and sculptor Rui Chafes produces new meaning through collaboration. And in the summer of 2016, the works of the two European artists meet the Ilmin Museum of Art in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, to present an unfamiliar and new challenge.
