우리는 인류세에 살고 있다. Welcome to the Anthropocene!

지구 정 반대편에 위치해 축구, 카니발, 삼바 문화 등 리듬과 예술 창작이 거리의 즉흥적 삶에 깊이 스며들어 있는 나라 브라질. 그곳은 전 세계 산소의 20%를 만들어내는 지구 산소탱크 아마존을 보유하고 바이오 연료 개발의 선두주자로서 에너지, 생태, 인류의 미래에 중요한 역할을 하는 지리적 특성을 가진다. 그러나 오늘날 아마존은 자본과 개발의 논리에 사로잡힌 인류의 인간성 회복을 시험하는 가장 치열한 현장이 되었다.

«Dear Amazon: 인류세 2019»는 브라질의 지역적, 문화적, 사회적 특이성을 중심으로 오늘날 한국과 브라질의 가장 시급한 사회적 이슈이면서 전 지구적 과제인 ‘인류세(Anthropocene)’와 관련한 지구생태위기를 매우 개인적이고 대화적인 톤으로 이야기한다. 인류세는 “인간이 지배하는 지질시대”를 가리키는 용어로, 2000년 네덜란드 대기화학자 파울 크뤼천에 의해 처음 환경문제에 대한 염려 속에서 등장했다. 크뤼천은 인류세라는 용어를 통해 인간의 모든 활동이 온실가스 배출, 산림벌채, 핵실험이라는 형태로 자연환경을 큰 폭으로 변화시켜, 지구 곳곳에 인류가 그 흔적을 남기게 된 시대를 가리키고자 했다. 최근 대중적 확산과 더불어 거의 모든 학계에서 뜨거운 논쟁의 중심이 되고 있는 인류세 개념은 단순히 지질 시대를 구분하고 환경 훼손에 따른 생태 위기를 다루는 개념을 넘어, 인류의 존재와 미래를 둘러싼 거대한 담론이 되어가고 있다.

이번 전시는 브라질의 젊은 예술가 11명의 작업을 선보이는 을 중심으로, 8팀의 한국 아티스트와 디자이너, 문학인, 애니메이션 감독, 환경운동가, 가드닝 스튜디오 등이 참여한 라운지 프로젝트 , 인류세를 주제로 한 브라질 비디오 작품 9편을 선보이는 스크리닝 프로그램 <비데오브라질 히스토리 컬렉션> 등 3 파트로 구성되었다. 브라질 작가들과 한국 관객들 사이의 친밀한 대화를 유도하는 «Dear Amazon: 인류세 2019»는 전 지구적 차원의 환경 문제에 직면한 오늘날, 포스트 아포칼립스에 대한 상상적 재현을 통해 문화텍스트가 할 수 있는 가장 실천적인 정치적, 철학적, 생태적 사고실험을 전개한다. 더불어, 각자 다른 역사와 경험이 서로 관계된 곳에 우리가 어떤 식으로 위치할 것인지 깊이 사고하고 이해하는 시도를 통해 인류세의 담화를 조금 더 폭넓게 접근할 수 있는 새로운 예술적 구조를 제공하고자 한다.

Indigenizing the Anthropocene

Located on the opposite side of the Earth, Brazil is a country where rhythm and art creation such as soccer, carnival and samba culture have deeply permeated in the improvised life of the streets. Brazil’s geographical characteristic plays a critical role for energy, ecology, and the future of humanity as it has the Amazon Rainforest, as called as the “Lungs of the Earth” for producing 20% of the Earth’s oxygen, and is the leader in the development of biofuels. Today, however, the Amazon strongly calls for proof of the restoration of humanity which has been seized by the logic of capital and development.

Focusing on Brazil’s regional, cultural, and social peculiarities, this exhibition Dear Amazon: BRAZIL X KOREA The Anthropocene 2019 aims to address the ecological crisis regarding ‘Anthropocene,’ with a more personal and interactive tone, which is a highly urgent social issue in Korea and Brazil today as well as the critical global problem, from an integrated viewpoint of various contemporary art practice and humanities. Anthropocene is a term that defines “a geological epoch under the significant human impact” which was first emphasized in 2000 by a Dutch atmospheric chemist Paul J. Crutzen with concern about environmental issues. Through this term, Crutzen attempted to indicate the time when every human behavior has exerted tremendous influence around the globe by causing enormous changes for the natural environment with such problems as greenhouse gas emission, deforestation, and nuclear testing. Recently, This concept of Anthropocene is discussed actively in almost all academic circles with the spread publicly. “Anthropocene” is going beyond a concept which distinguishes the geological era and addresses the ecological crisis due to the environmental damages to it is rather becoming a grand narrative around the existence and future of humanity.

Centered on “Dear Amazon” that presents the works of 11 Brazilian young artists, this exhibition consists of 3 parts including Lounge Project “Dear Tomorrow” that involves the works of 8 teams of Korean artists, designer, writer, animation director, environmentalist, and gardening studio, and Screening Program “Videobrasil Historical Collection” that shows 9 Brazilian videos on the subject of Anthropocene. Dear Amazon: BRAZIL X KOREA The Anthropocene 2019 encourages an intimate conversation between Brazilian artists and Korean audiences. Today when environmental issues have reached the global level, the exhibition Dear Amazon: BRAZIL X KOREA The Anthropocene 2019 develops the political, philosophical, and ecological thought experiments in the most practical way that cultural texts are capable of, through the imaginary representation about post-Apocalypse. Moreover, Dear Amazon: BRAZIL X KOREA The Anthropocene 2019 aims to provide the new artistic structure which enables artists and audiences of Korea and Brazil to widely approach the discourse of Anthropocene through the attempt to think and understand how we position ourselves where different histories and experiences are related.
