예술 작품은 작가가 만들어 낸 생산물이지만 한 시대의 삶을 관통해 작가에게 주어진 것이기도 하다. 작품과 전시는 예술가 개인이 도달한 미적 성과일 뿐 아니라 시대 안에서 특정 집단 혹은 공동체가 나누는 인식의 지평을 보여준다. ‘IMA Picks’는 이러한 생각 아래 일민미술관이 주목하는 세 명의 작가를 선정해 개인전을 선보이는 기획이다. 올해로 3회를 맞은 《이마 픽스 2024》는 김민애, 백현진, 차재민을 미술관 전관에서 소개한다.

세 작가는 조각, 회화, 영상 매체를 중심으로 예술적 방법론을 발전시켜 왔다.

김민애(b.1981)의 조각은 현실을 지탱하는 외피로서 구조와 제도가 가진 견고함을 관찰하면서, 그것이 만든 장면의 역설적인 취약함을 미술에 관한 은유로 제시한다. 일견 완고하고 단단한 개념이 허술한 이중성을 드러낼 때 감지하는 모순은 미술의 완전성과 무의미함에 대한 작가의 고민과 맞닿는다.

백현진(b.1972)의 회화는 퍼포먼스, 음악, 연기, 그래픽 디자인 등의 영역에서 펼치는 폭넓은 시청각 경험의 총체다. 명징한 계획이나 목적 없이도 언제나 미술사적 전유가 작동하는 동시대 회화의 화면은 그에게 언어와 논리로 형용할 수 없는 감각 덩어리들을 퇴적하기에 적합한 장소다.

차재민(b.1986)의 영상은 심리, 감정, 육체 사이의 긴장으로부터 현대사회의 징후를 포착한 결과다. 그의 작품은 시간의 지속이라는 매체 본연의 형식과 함께 서사 구축, 글쓰기, 리서치, 대면 인터뷰를 포괄하는 영상의 가능성을 탐구한다. 이로써 그는 심리학, 의학, 법학 등 고도로 전문화된 지식 체계가 추상화하는 물질의 상태를 스크린 속 시각 체계로 재조망한다.

미술 작가가 매체를 다루는 다면적인 입장과 태도, 그 결과의 차이는 동시대 미술의 중요한 비평점이다. 그러나 세계의 일면을 깊이 들여다보는 과정에서 세 작가는 개별 매체의 상이함에 유연하게 대응하며, 때로 차이를 뛰어 넘는 공통성을 발견한다. 또 자신의 전형적인 습관들 틈에서 미학적 목표를 구체화할 방안을 찾는다. 이들의 작품은 지금 시대에 팽배한 환경, 분위기, 기술 조건의 변화를 담은 산실인 동시에 스스로 믿는 아름다움의 체계를 빌어 현실의 불능감을 해소해 나가는 방편이다.

예술가는 자신의 상상을 작업으로 실현함으로써 세계에 관해 발언한다. 상상의 원리 위에 작품을 쌓고 작품의 잔상으로 전시를 축조하여 세계를 향해 말을 거는 일은 자신이 무엇을 보는지, 그리고 자신이 어떤 존재인지를 설명하는 미술가 고유의 노력이다. 작업에 가장 중요한 가치를 부여하며 만족스러운 결과에 이르고자 하는 노력은 때로 예술이 주는 영원한 고통처럼 보인다. 이는 인간이 수행하듯 겪는 매일의 삶과 정확히 구분되지 않는다. 이러한 작가적 태도를 돌아보는 것은 일민미술관이 지속해 온 동시대 현실의 연구를 작가 연구로 확장하는 시도다.

An artwork is a creation of the artist, yet it is also something delivered to the artist through the experience of an era. Artworks and exhibitions are not only aesthetic achievements of individual artists but also windows into the collective consciousness of a particular community or collective of the era. ‘IMA Picks’ is a curated initiative by the Ilmin Museum of Art that showcases solo exhibitions of three artists under this premise. IMA Picks 2024, the third edition of the series, presents Kim Minae, Bek Hyunjin, and Cha Jeamin across the entire museum.

The three artists build their artistic methodologies through sculpture, painting, and video.

Kim Minae’s (b.1981) sculptures act as shells that constitute reality and probe the integrity of social structures and institutions. Kim presents the paradoxical fragility of sculpturally constructed scenes as a metaphor for art. The contradiction between the seemingly inflexible and solid concept and its loose ends reflects Kim’s contemplation on the completeness and futility of art.

Bek Hyunjin’s (b.1972) paintings are an ensemble of diverse audiovisual experiences presented through performance, music, acting, and graphic design. In the realm of contemporary art, abound with aimless historical appropriations, the canvas, to Bek, becomes a site for the sedimentation of sensory experiences that elude verbal and logical description.

Cha Jeamin’s (b.1986) videos capture signals of contemporary society from the tension between the mind, emotion, and body. Cha’s work explores the possibilities of the video medium that incorporates narrative construction, writing, research, and interviews, as well as its inherent nature as a durational medium. In this process, Cha reinvestigates materialities that are abstracted by way of highly specialized knowledge systems, such as psychology, medical science, and law, through the visual framework of the screen.

The diverse approaches artists use toward their mediums and the differences in their outcomes represent crucial critique points within contemporary art. Nevertheless, in their exploration of specific facets of the world, these artists flexibly respond to the differences among their mediums and, at times, discover commonalities that transcend the differences. They also devise ways to materialize the aesthetic aims amidst their own established habits. All in all, their works serve both as a reflection of the changing environmental, atmospheric, and technological conditions prevailing in our time and as an outlet and embodiment of their personal visions of beauty through which they can resolve the impossibility of reality.

Artists express their views on the world by materializing their imagination. By building upon the principles of imagination and constructing exhibitions from the spirit of these works, artists engage in a unique effort to articulate what they observe and who they are. The attempt to achieve the most satisfying outcome while assigning the utmost value to the object seems like an eternal torment intrinsic to practicing art. In a way, this struggle is indistinguishable from the burden of the daily life of human experience. Ilmin Museum of Art strives to expand its study of contemporary realities through reflecting on the philosophies and perspectives of artists.
